We received some great feedback from our customer Brisbane Granite and Marble recently. Brisbane Granite and Marble are based in Northgate Brisbane. Philip started his feedback with the realisation that every company has when billing for hours worked.

Having a system that tracks time, makes you look and think about billing hours. That’s without even looking at the data…..When …

Every manager or supervisor who works in a project-based work environment, has certainly experienced the issue of inefficiency. Of course, if an employee is intentionally slacking off, then there are disciplinary measures that can take place. But inefficiency doesn’t always need to relate to work ethic. But, if someone does a job slower, therefore extending the completion date of a project, do you know if you can withhold some or all that pay cheque?
Technically, the answer to that question is no. If an individual is working their scheduled shift, and putting effort into their accomplishments, then it can be …

While it may not be the “right” way to pay employees, you may choose to offer payment to some under the table. Effectively, what this means is that payment is in cash, and that it is not put on the books. From this perspective, taxes do not need to be paid by either the employees or the employer. Cash is most typical, strictly because it can change hands without being tracked. While paying employees with cash isn’t something that is really encouraged, it is done whether businesses admit it or not and proceeding with caution is integral.
Stick to casual …

With any job, there is a dedicated number of days that employees can use to go on holiday. While typically, this is part of their job benefits – meaning that employees receive paid vacation time – employees may request additional time off. If you have an employee that is making such a request, consider the following:
Can the job be done sufficiently if the employee takes a higher number of days off per year? – Scheduling and compensating for employees to go on holiday is already a challenge. Particularly when you are operating a small business where one person is …

When an employee is leaving the company, there are some minimum financial compensation requirements that you must submit to as an employer. These requirements, according to the Australian Government Fair Work Ombudsmanapply whether you have terminated the employee, or if they resigned.
Pay all outstanding funds – you must pay an employee that is leaving their full wages based on their hours worked, or based on their normal salary. This includes any overtime hours worked, and any penalty rates that apply. Just because an employee is leaving doesn’t mean you owe them any less than an employee that is remaining …

When hiring casual employees that don’t necessarily work consistent shifts week after week or day after day. it is challenging to determine how they should be paid, and what their job classification will be from a legal perspective.
Two popular options are putting these employees on payroll or setting them up as an independent contractor. Having them labelled as an independent contractor, has a number if different pros and cons.
You don’t not need to worry about submitting tax deductions from payroll on behalf of the employee.
They are responsible for invoicing the business once the job has been completed.

Those that are new to working in Australia’s economy, may not be familiar with the standards for minimum wage. There are some important facts to note:
Minimum wage standards apply to individuals that are age 21 and older, and that are employed full-time.
Younger employees are paid a percentage based on their age, and the minimum wage standard.
Not all employees are paid minimum wage. Other agreements are set and negotiated independently. In most cases, these are higher than the minimum wage standard.
Full-time adult employees are also paid additional benefits by the Australian government.
Part-time employees are paid a rate …

No matter what your business is, your employees will have to eat lunch during the day. Whether you have to pay them for the time spent eating is the question, though. The answer is relatively simple; while you’re required to give your workers breaks, you aren’t required to pay them for lunch time. You may choose to do so, but it’s not required of you. Sounds simple, right? Well how do you handle the clock out and clock back in process during lunch? You don’t want to pay employees for work they’re not doing if …
